Luddesdown
Silverhand Estate was established at Luddesdown in 2019 and takes its name from the legend of King Ludd. The estate has planted what it describes as the UK’s largest single organic vineyard, with sparkling wine at the centre of production. A cellar door and programme of tours allow visitors to explore the estate and taste the wines.
The 900-acre estate includes vines, pasture and woodland within the Kent Downs National Landscape. It is farmed organically, with sheep and English Longhorn cattle used for grazing and fertility. A conservation team manages habitats across the property. Silverhand reports that the estate is carbon negative without using offsets.
WINEMAKER
Silverhand uses two methods for its sparkling wines. Silver Reign undergoes its second fermentation in pressurised tanks, known as the Charmat method. The Classic Brut uses the traditional method, with its second fermentation and two years of ageing on the lees taking place in bottle.
