Mike and Christine Roberts planted Ridgeview’s first vines near Ditchling in Sussex in 1995. Its first wine was released in 2000 and named English Wine of the Year. A decade later, the Blanc de Blancs 2006 won Decanter’s Best Global Sparkling Wine award. The family estate continues to specialise in traditional-method sparkling wine.
Ridgeview’s home vineyard lies near Ditchling at the foot of the South Downs. Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grow in its clay-rich soils. The winery also uses grapes from partner vineyards across southern England, with parcels fermented separately before blending.
WINEMAKER
Simon Roberts became head winemaker in 2014, continuing the work begun by his parents, Mike and Christine. He oversees production from pressing and fermentation through to blending and bottle ageing. In 2018, Ridgeview became the first English producer to receive the International Wine & Spirit Competition’s International Winemaker of the Year award.
