The Story

Nyetimber’s history reaches back to 1086, when the estate was recorded in the Domesday Book. Its modern winemaking story began in 1988 with the planting of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier specifically for traditional-method sparkling wine. Current owner and Chief Executive Eric Heerema acquired Nyetimber in 2006 with a long-term ambition to produce English sparkling wines capable of standing alongside the world’s finest. Today, Nyetimber uses only grapes grown in its own vineyards and controls every stage from vineyard to bottle. The estate has subsequently grown into one of the defining names in English sparkling wine, combining its historic West Sussex home with vineyards across West Sussex, Hampshire and Kent.

Our Terroir & Heritage

The Vineyards

Nyetimber owns eleven vineyards across West Sussex, Hampshire and Kent, covering approximately 350 hectares. The vineyards are planted with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier on greensand and chalk soils across southern England. Grapes are grown entirely on Nyetimber-owned land and harvested by hand. Each vineyard parcel is picked, pressed and fermented separately, giving the winemaking team a broad selection of individual components from which to create each final blend.

The Winemaker

WINEMAKER

Cherie Spriggs & Brad Greatrix

Head Winemaker Cherie Spriggs and Senior Winemaker Brad Greatrix joined Nyetimber in 2007 after recognising the potential of its wines. Working together, they oversee the development of every wine, from assessing individual vineyard parcels and harvest timing through to pressing, fermentation, blending and extended ageing. Their parcel-by-parcel approach allows the character of Nyetimber’s different vineyards to contribute to each final blend. In 2018, Cherie became the first woman and the first winemaker from outside Champagne to receive the International Wine Challenge’s Sparkling Winemaker of the Year award.
