Pulborough
The Nyetimber estate appears in the Domesday Book of 1086, but its winegrowing history began in 1988 with the planting of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier for traditional-method sparkling wine. Eric Heerema acquired the business in 2006. It has since expanded from its West Sussex home into Hampshire and Kent, continuing to make wine entirely from its own grapes.
Nyetimber’s vineyards span West Sussex, Hampshire and Kent, with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier planted on greensand and chalk soils. All grapes come from its own vineyards and are harvested by hand. Parcels are picked, pressed and fermented separately before blending.
WINEMAKER
Cherie Spriggs and Brad Greatrix joined Nyetimber in 2007. As head winemaker and senior winemaker, they oversee harvest decisions, fermentation, blending and ageing. In 2018, Cherie became the first woman and the first winemaker outside Champagne to win the International Wine Challenge’s Sparkling Winemaker of the Year award.
