Champagne house Pommery began its English wine project in 2014 and acquired Pinglestone Estate in 2017. It was the first Champagne producer to plant its own vineyard in England. The estate’s first harvest took place in 2020.
The winery stands close to the vineyard, allowing fruit from the 29 blocks to be pressed soon after picking and kept separate for blending. Visitors can tour the estate on selected dates and taste the wines in a seventeenth-century barn.
Pinglestone covers 50 hectares of rolling Hampshire chalk. Thirty-five hectares are planted across 29 blocks with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Pinot Gris. The remaining 15 hectares are managed for biodiversity, with wildflower margins, hedges, grazing sheep and beehives.
WINEMAKER
Will Perkins joined Louis Pommery in 2022 after five years at Hattingley Valley. He has also worked in South Africa, Spain, California, New Zealand and Australia. The separate vineyard blocks give him a range of base wines to use when assembling each blend.
