Herstmonceux, Hailsham
Lawrence Warr planted seven acres of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier at Herstmonceux in 2007. Henners’ first commercial harvest followed in 2011. Wine merchant Boutinot initially helped distribute the wines, then bought the estate in 2017.
Henners now makes both still and traditional-method sparkling wines, using estate fruit alongside grapes from selected growers across south-east England.
Henners’ vineyard overlooks the Pevensey Levels on a south-facing slope about five miles from the English Channel. Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grow on clay and sandstone. The slope helps drainage, while the coastal setting moderates temperatures. Grapes from partner vineyards provide additional varieties and blending options.
WINEMAKER
Head Winemaker and Estate Manager Collette O’Leary leads the team with Operations Winemaker Sam Williams and Vineyard Manager Richard Morris. They produce still wines and traditional-method sparkling wines, with lees ageing contributing texture and richness to the sparkling range.
