Near Alresford
Simon Robinson established Hattingley Valley as a diversification of his Hampshire farm, planting the first vines at Chalky Hill in 2008. A second vineyard followed in 2011, and the first wines were released in 2013. The butterfly on its labels is a silver-washed fritillary, found on the farm during an ecological survey.
The winery near Lower Wield produces Hattingley’s own wines and provides contract winemaking for other vineyards. It uses grapes from its home vineyards and growers elsewhere in England.
The home vineyards are Chalky Hill, planted in 2008, and New Site, planted in 2011. Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier are the main varieties, with smaller plantings of Bacchus and Pinot Gris. Hattingley also sources grapes from growers in other English regions.
WINEMAKER
Hampshire-born Robert MacCulloch MW became head winemaker in 2022 after more than two decades in wine, including harvests across five continents. He leads the team making Hattingley’s wines, using some oak, reserve wines and extended bottle ageing in the sparkling range.
