1276 Wines may be a new name, but vines have a surprisingly long history on these Ledbury slopes. The name nods to a 1276 entry in the Bishop of Hereford’s Red Book recording local viticulture — a neat link between medieval roots and a thoroughly modern winery. The estate grew out of Cilla and Tim Sobey’s Redbank Vineyard, planted in 2012 on land once devoted to apples. Their son, Angus Davison, helped turn that fruit-growing heritage into a working wine business, with the first 1276-labelled wines released in 2023. Today the team makes expressive still and sparkling wines shaped by Herefordshire fruit, alongside contract winemaking for other British growers. The mood is ambitious but wonderfully down to earth: good farming, precise winemaking and wines that are made to be opened and enjoyed.
Redbank Vineyard covers 25 acres at Wall Hills, just outside Ledbury. Its south and south-east-facing slopes sit on clay loam over ancient Silurian mudstone, giving the vines a distinctly Herefordshire setting. First planted in 2012, the site supplies fruit for both still and traditional-method sparkling wines. 1276 is a Sustainable Wines of Great Britain member and takes a practical, whole-business approach to sustainability — from vineyard decisions and efficient winery operations to lighter-impact packaging and a balance between people, planet and profit.
WINEMAKER
Head Winemaker Laurence Cocking keeps the focus firmly on place. His aim is not to force Herefordshire fruit into a borrowed style, but to let each vineyard and vintage show its own personality. That means careful, responsive winemaking and a sharp eye for freshness, texture and balance. At 1276 he works across both estate and contract wines, bringing technical precision without losing sight of the simple pleasure at the heart of every bottle.
