Stratford-upon-Avon
Welcombe Hills began in 2001 as a half-acre hobby vineyard overlooking Stratford-upon-Avon. Jonathan and Nichola Kelsey bought the house and vineyard in 2017 after moving from London to Warwickshire. They took on the vineyard work themselves and expanded the planting in 2020. The family now produces small batches of still and sparkling wine.
Around 6,000 vines grow on 4.5 acres of rocky clay slopes above the River Avon. The nine grape varieties include Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Bacchus and Pinot Précoce, alongside less widely planted varieties such as Auxerrois and Kerner. Apple and plum orchards surround the vineyard.
WINEMAKER
Jonathan and Nichola look after the vineyard themselves. They moved to Warwickshire in 2017, bought a home that came with vines, and decided to learn how to grow the grapes. In 2020, they planted another 3,500 vines.
