Jackson Family Wines established Marbury in 2023 to make still Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in the Crouch Valley. The first releases use fruit from established vineyards in the valley while Marbury’s own 60 acres of vines mature. Charlie Holland oversees both the wines and the development of the estate vineyard.
The 60-acre vineyard slopes towards the Crouch estuary, less than ten miles from the North Sea. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grow from 48 metres down to seven metres above sea level. Dense London Clay retains water through the area’s dry growing seasons, while the long autumn gives the fruit time to ripen for still wine.
WINEMAKER
Charlie Holland has made wine in Australia, France, Germany, New Zealand and the United States. He returned to England in 2009 and later became chief winemaker at Gusbourne. At Marbury, he uses whole-bunch pressing for Chardonnay, gentle extraction for Pinot Noir and measured ageing in French oak.

Ripe citrus, apple blossom and orchard fruit broaden into brioche, fennel seed and toasted hazelnut. Barrel fermentation and lees ageing bring texture, while orange zest and a long mineral line hold this debut Chardonnay in elegant balance.

Ripe orchard fruit and apple blossom meet warm bread, rich-tea biscuit and a cool stony note. Ten months in mostly seasoned French oak build a creamy middle, while citrus acidity and a saline finish keep this concentrated Essex Chardonnay taut.

Cherry, wild strawberry and violet lead into blackberry and cassis, with forest floor, tobacco and a savoury soy-like edge adding intrigue. Gentle extraction and ten months in French oak leave the tannins silky and the long finish distinctly mineral.
