Branchline Chardonnay
Guide price: £25
Recorded vintages: 2025
An estate-grown Chardonnay fermented with wild yeast and lightly oaked, bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Andy and Fi Beamish bought Church Farm in 2012 and planted its first vines in 2019. They launched Mallard Point in 2022, naming it after the locomotive that set the steam speed record near Essendine. The farm now combines a vineyard, winery and distillery.
Fi uses grape skins in the distillery, while winery by-products feed the farm’s Hereford cattle. Sheep graze the vineyard in winter, and customers can return the aluminium bottles for cleaning and refilling.
Church Farm has more than 18,500 vines near Stamford in Rutland, close to the East Coast Main Line. Bacchus, Chardonnay and Pinot varieties grow alongside disease-resistant Sauvignac and Cabernet Jura. The family uses wildflower strips, cover crops, mechanical weeding and winter sheep grazing in the vineyard.
WINEMAKER
Andy Beamish makes the wines at Church Farm’s on-site winery. He uses hand-picked grapes and wild yeast cultured from the vineyard, bottling the wines unfined and unfiltered. The range includes still wines and pink pét-nat.
