Halfpenny Green, Bobbington
Farmer Martin Vickers planted Halfpenny Green’s first half-acre of vines in 1983. Another 22 acres followed in 1991, and the South Staffordshire vineyard now covers almost 30 acres.
The estate remains family-run. Martin’s son Clive leads winemaking, while Clive’s wife Lisa has helped develop the shop, restaurant and tearooms. Alongside its own wines, the winery provides production services for other vineyards across England and Wales.
The vineyard occupies sheltered, south-facing slopes near Bobbington, around 250 feet above sea level. Light, sandy soils drain freely. Sixteen grape varieties include Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Bacchus, Huxelrebe, Madeleine Angevine, Regent, Rondo and Schönburger, supporting a range of still and sparkling wines.
WINEMAKER
Clive Vickers leads the team at the winery, which opened in 2005. They make the family’s still and traditional-method sparkling wines and also handle fruit for other English and Welsh vineyards. The winery’s services include fermentation, bottling, disgorgement and labelling.
