Appledore, Ashford
Andrew Weeber founded Gusbourne in 2004, planting vines at Appledore in Kent. The estate set out to make vintage wines entirely from its own grapes, releasing its first Brut Reserve and Blanc de Blancs in 2010. It now has vineyards in both Kent and West Sussex, producing still wines alongside its traditional-method sparkling range.
Gusbourne grows Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier across two sites. Around Appledore in Kent, roughly 60 hectares of vines grow on clay and sandstone. Near Goodwood in West Sussex, about 30 hectares grow on chalk and flint. The grapes are hand-picked, with parcels handled separately before blending.
WINEMAKER
Head winemaker Mary Bridges works with fruit from Gusbourne’s own vineyards. The team uses whole-bunch pressing, cool fermentation and some older oak, keeping vineyard parcels separate before blending. Sparkling wines undergo extended ageing on their lees before release.
