1989
Puttenham
Greyfriars’ first Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vines were planted in 1989. Mike and Hilary Wagstaff took over in 2010 and expanded the vineyard, built a winery and created a 3,500-square-foot chalk cave for storing and ageing the wines.
The estate now has more than 50,000 vines. Local volunteers join the harvest, and visitors can explore the vineyard on walks and guided tours.
Greyfriars occupies a south-facing site on the Hog’s Back in Surrey’s North Downs. The chalk drains freely, while the slope helps cold air flow away from the vines. Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier are the main sparkling-wine varieties; smaller plantings include Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris and Sauvignon Blanc.
WINEMAKER
Oliver Key leads the winery team. He uses reserve wines from earlier harvests to maintain consistency in the non-vintage blends, alongside separate vintage releases. The base wines are held in stainless steel or used oak, and extended ageing on the lees adds texture to the sparkling wines.
