Abingworth began in 2021 when Chris and Caroline Stedman traded London life for a long-held ambition to make English wine. Chris’s years in France and technical background helped turn the idea into a working vineyard and winery at Champions Farm. This is very much a family chapter: their four daughters bring marketing, product, operations and creative experience, giving the business its distinctive female-led energy. The names and labels draw on the history and landscape of the site, while the wines aim to make that sense of place feel immediate rather than dusty. Still wines are central to Abingworth’s identity, but 2026 brought its first traditional-method sparkling release — an exciting sign of what this young estate is building.
Abingworth sits at Champions Farm near Thakeham, in the foothills of the South Downs. The site’s greensand and sandy loam soils, together with the cool West Sussex climate, favour slow ripening, freshness and naturally bright acidity. Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and other carefully chosen varieties are used for a growing range of still and sparkling wines. Sustainability is treated as daily practice rather than a badge: farming, winery decisions, recyclable packaging, wildlife and community are considered together. The aim is thoughtful progress that protects the landscape while giving the fruit room to speak.
WINEMAKER
Head of Viticulture & Winemaking Dominic Travers joined Abingworth in 2024. His experience spans biodynamic, organic and conventional vineyards, supported by study at the Royal Agricultural University and time at Nyetimber. At Abingworth he connects vineyard decisions directly with the cellar, building wines around clarity, balance and the individual story of each site and vintage.

Wild strawberry, redcurrant and cranberry meet a touch of red apple. Bright acidity, a creamy texture and soft minerality carry the dry summer-fruit finish.

Fine, persistent bubbles carry lemon zest, green apple and white peach, with toasted brioche and pastry from more than five years on lees. Bright acidity and a mineral line lead into a creamy, composed finish.

Morello cherry and violet open into soft spice, smoked plum and raspberry. Fine-grained tannins and eight months in French oak give the finish a poised, velvety shape.
