UKFizz helps people discover British wines, producers, venues and events. This notice explains how we use personal information when you browse, contact us, nominate a business or submit a listing. We do not currently take payments through this website.
1. Who is responsible for your information?
UKFizz Ltd operates ukfizz.co.uk and is the data controller responsible for the personal information described in this notice. For a privacy question, a request about your information or a complaint, please use our Contact page and mark your message “Privacy”. You do not need to publish your home address to contact us or participate in the directory.
2. What we collect
Enquiries: your name, email address, message and any telephone number or business information you choose to provide. The Contact form marks required fields; a telephone number is optional. Without the required information we may be unable to reply or deal with your request.
Listings, claims, nominations and events: your contact details, your connection to a business, information about the producer, venue, wine or event, supporting links, comments and any images or documents you supply. We may keep correspondence and verification or moderation records.
Public directory information: business websites, published event information, professional profiles, public directories and nominations may provide names, roles, business contact details and material used in our editorial listings. Please tell us if information about you is inaccurate or should be reviewed.
Technical information: hosting, security and form services may record IP addresses, browser/device information, pages visited, submission dates and times, and other information used to deliver the site and detect abuse. Our Contact form records the page URL, submission time, browser information and IP address alongside the submission. Analytics can also record interactions and cookie identifiers.
3. Why we use information and our lawful bases
We use enquiry information to answer questions and provide support, relying on our legitimate interests in running UKFizz and communicating with people who contact us. Where you ask about services you may purchase, processing necessary to take steps at your request before a contract, or to deliver an agreed contract, is based on that contract purpose.
We use listing, nomination and professional information to check submissions, keep the directory accurate, manage claims and publish useful editorial content. Our legitimate interests are maintaining a trustworthy directory and helping people discover British wine businesses and events. Security checks and records help us prevent spam, misuse and unauthorised changes, also in our legitimate interests. These interests must be balanced against your rights.
We rely on consent for optional sharing choices, such as permission to share a nominator’s name and comments with a nominated producer, and for optional marketing or tracking where consent is required. Sending an enquiry or nomination does not itself subscribe you to a marketing list. We may also process information to meet a legal obligation or establish, exercise or defend legal claims.
4. What becomes public
Information supplied for a business, wine or event listing may appear publicly after editorial review. This can include business contact details intended for publication, descriptions, photographs and event locations. Private enquiries and claim-verification correspondence are not intended for public display. On nominations, any optional permission to share your name and comments is separate from submitting the recommendation; your email address is not part of that sharing choice.
Only upload material you have permission to provide and that is suitable for publication. Images in the website’s media storage can be accessible by their direct link, even if not attached to a listing. Remove embedded location data and other private metadata first. Do not send passwords, payment-card details, identity documents or sensitive personal information through general forms.
5. Service providers and other recipients
Authorised people working on UKFizz and providers supporting hosting, email delivery, website maintenance, backups and security may process information where needed for those services. Our site uses WordPress and Elementor, including Elementor hosting and form submissions. Hosting infrastructure may involve Google Cloud and Cloudflare. ShortPixel processes images for optimisation. Google services support Analytics and reCAPTCHA anti-spam checks; Microsoft Clarity supports website-usage analysis, subject to the cookie choices described below.
We may disclose relevant information to professional advisers or authorities where necessary to comply with law, protect rights or deal with a dispute. We do not sell personal information. Businesses featured in the directory do not receive private enquiry details merely because they are listed.
6. Cookies, analytics and anti-spam checks
Your cookie choices: we use Complianz and the WP Consent API to manage choices for essential storage, preferences, analytics and external services. Essential storage supports site operation, security, sign-in and remembering your choices. Optional categories can be accepted, rejected or selected individually. Use the Cookie settings control to review or withdraw your choices at any time. Scrolling or continuing to browse is not treated as consent. Your choice is remembered for up to 180 days, unless you change it or clear your browser storage sooner.
Analytics: Google Analytics helps us understand visits and interactions, using information such as pages viewed, device/browser characteristics and identifiers. It is separate from information you deliberately enter in an enquiry. Site Kit’s Google Consent Mode communicates your choices to Google and adjusts its tags; Google code may still connect to Google to communicate consent status when optional storage is refused. Google provides information about Analytics data safeguards and an Analytics opt-out browser add-on.
Microsoft Clarity is also included in the Analytics category and is blocked until that category is allowed. It can use cookies and similar technologies to analyse pages viewed, clicks, scrolling and other interactions, including heatmaps and session replays, to help us improve the website. Microsoft also processes information under its own terms; see the Microsoft Privacy Statement for its uses and safeguards.
External services and anti-spam: embedded videos, social content and Google reCAPTCHA may connect to third parties and process technical information when loaded. reCAPTCHA assesses interactions and technical information to distinguish genuine submissions from abuse; its cookies can include _GRECAPTCHA. Our consent controls block it until permission is given for external services. If you prefer not to enable it, use the email option on our Contact page instead of the protected form. Allowing cookies does not subscribe you to a marketing mailing list.
Withdrawing permission applies to future activity and does not undo information already sent lawfully. You can also manage or delete existing cookies in your browser; doing so may affect saved choices and site features. Cookie lifetimes are separate from how long providers retain information already collected. Links to producer shops, booking platforms and social networks lead to services with their own privacy arrangements.
7. Where information is processed
Our service providers may process information outside the UK, including in Europe and the United States. International transfers must be covered by an applicable UK adequacy decision or another permitted safeguard, such as approved contractual terms and the UK Addendum where appropriate. You can contact us to ask which providers and safeguards apply to your information and how to obtain relevant details.
8. Keeping information safe and deciding how long to keep it
We use HTTPS and access-controlled website administration, alongside our providers’ security measures. No website, email system or internet transmission can be guaranteed completely secure. Please contact us promptly if you suspect misuse of information supplied to UKFizz.
We keep personal information only for as long as needed for its purpose. For enquiries this depends on resolving your request, relevant follow-up and any resulting service relationship. For listing and moderation records it depends on maintaining and verifying the listing and dealing with corrections or disputed changes. Security records are assessed against investigating and preventing abuse. Legal obligations and the need to deal with claims can require longer retention. Information no longer needed should be deleted or anonymised; backup copies may remain until replaced under the relevant backup cycle. Contact us if you need details about a particular record.
9. Your choices and rights
Depending on the circumstances, UK data protection law gives you rights to request access to your information, correct it, ask for deletion, restrict its use and receive certain information in a portable format. You can withdraw consent for future processing at any time; this does not affect processing that was lawful before withdrawal.
You have the right to object to processing based on legitimate interests, taking account of your circumstances, and an absolute right to object to direct marketing. Tell us what you would like us to stop or review.
Use our Contact page to make a request. We may need proportionate information to verify your identity, but please do not send identity documents unless we explain why they are necessary and agree a suitable method. We normally respond to rights requests within one month; lawful extensions or exceptions may apply and we will explain them.
You can also complain to us about how we use your information. We will acknowledge a data protection complaint within 30 days and investigate, keeping you informed without undue delay. You have the right to complain to the UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).
10. Children, recommendations and future payments
UKFizz’s wine-related services are intended for adults aged 18 and over. We do not seek information from children. If a child has supplied personal information, please contact us so we can review and remove it where appropriate. Wine suggestions and editorial recommendations do not make automated decisions with legal or similarly significant effects on you.
There is currently no payment checkout on UKFizz. A displayed wine price or event-listing option does not mean we collect card details. Purchases and bookings made through external links are handled by those providers. Before introducing payment collection or a materially different use of information, we will update this notice and provide the relevant information when details are collected.
Copyright, images and database use
This section concerns use of website content, not your data protection rights. Copyright in UKFizz’s original writing and design belongs to UKFizz Ltd or its licensors. Photographs, logos and other supplied material remain the property of their respective rights holders. Copyright and database rights may protect the original selection, arrangement and investment in the UKFizz directory; this does not mean UKFizz owns the underlying facts.
You are welcome to browse for personal use and share links to our pages. Contact us about permission before reusing protected text or images or extracting and reusing a substantial part of the directory. Any permission must also cover third-party material where applicable. Nothing in this notice limits lawful quotation, fair dealing or other statutory exceptions. If you believe material infringes your rights, send us the page or image link and enough information to identify the material and your claim.
