Gribble Bridge Sparkling Ortega Demi-Sec
£28
Floral and aromatic, with sweet green apple, ripe orchard fruit and soft bubbles. A generous, gently sweet sparkling wine made from some of Kent’s oldest Ortega vines.
1969
Biddenden
Falling apple prices led the Barnes family to consider a new use for part of their orchard. After Joyce Barnes heard a BBC Woman’s Hour feature about English wine, the family planted its first third of an acre in 1969. Second and third generations of the family now run the 23-acre estate.
The vineyard occupies sheltered, gently south-facing slopes outside Biddenden. Sandy loam over clay and a long growing season support 12 grape varieties, including Pinot Noir, Bacchus and Ortega. The grapes are picked by hand and processed at the estate winery.
WINEMAKER
Julian Barnes leads the winemaking with his son Tom and the wider family team. More than five decades of experience with the site informs a range that includes traditional-method sparkling wine, still wine, sweet wine and limited releases.
