The Story

Welcombe Hills Vineyard began in 2001 as a half-acre hobby vineyard overlooking Stratford-upon-Avon. The site grew in stages, bringing together nine grape varieties across its rocky clay slopes above the River Avon. Jonathan and Nichola Kelsey moved from London to rural Warwickshire in 2017 and bought the house and vineyard. With no previous vineyard experience, they chose to manage it themselves and developed Welcombe Hills as a hands-on family business. Further planting in 2020 expanded the estate to around 4.5 acres and 6,000 vines. Today, Welcombe Hills produces small-batch still and sparkling wines, available online and through selected local stockists.

Our Terroir & Heritage

The Vineyards

Welcombe Hills Vineyard occupies rocky clay slopes above the River Avon near Stratford-upon-Avon. Its approximately 4.5 acres are planted with around 6,000 vines across nine grape varieties, giving the family an unusually broad palette for both still and sparkling wines. The original half-acre planting dates from 2001, with the estate expanded through further planting in 2020. The vineyard is managed on a small, hands-on scale by the Kelsey family.

The Winemaker

WINEMAKER

Jonathan and Nichola Kelsey

Jonathan and Nichola Kelsey run Welcombe Hills Vineyard together as a hands-on family business. Since taking over in 2017, they have learned to manage the vineyard themselves, working across its unusually varied collection of grape varieties and continuing to expand the estate. Their approach is personal and small-scale, combining careful vineyard work with a strong sense of place overlooking Stratford-upon-Avon.
