THE NO-SNIFFING-REQUIRED GUIDE
Wine questions are welcome here
Straight answers about UK wine, fizz and UKFizz — with the jargon gently moved out of the way.
Is UK wine actually good?
Yes — and the best way to prove it is to taste some. Producers across the UK are making characterful sparkling and still wines, from classic-method fizz to aromatic whites, rosé and lighter reds. UKFizz helps you find a bottle without pretending you need a qualification first.
What is the difference between English sparkling wine and Champagne?
Champagne can only come from the Champagne region of France. English sparkling wine is made in England; Welsh sparkling wine is made in Wales. Many producers use the same traditional method, where the second fermentation happens in the bottle, but climate, soils, grapes and individual winemaking give every wine its own personality.
Why does UK wine sometimes cost more than imported wine?
Many UK vineyards are small, hands-on businesses working in a cool and unpredictable climate. Land, labour, lower production volumes and the years some sparkling wines spend ageing all affect the price. A higher price is not a compulsory instruction to look serious while drinking it.
Do I need to know anything about wine to use UKFizz?
Not at all. Browse by producer or style if you know what you want, or use Find Your Fizz when your tasting vocabulary begins and ends with “nice”. Curiosity is enough.
Can I nominate my local pub, restaurant or bottle shop?
Please do. If it champions UK wine, we want to hear about it. Send us the details through the nomination page and we will review the listing before it appears.
Can producers add themselves?
Yes. Producers can nominate their vineyard and submit wines for the directory. We review entries so the information stays useful, consistent and connected to the right producer record.
How cold should sparkling wine actually be?
Cool, not numb. Around 8–10°C is a useful starting point for most sparkling wines; more complex or mature bottles can show more flavour a little warmer. If it has been in the fridge, give it a few minutes in the glass and see what changes.
Why UKFizz?
Because UK wine deserves a discovery platform with energy. We bring producers, wines, places, events and experiences together, lead with sparkling wine, explain the unfamiliar bits and leave the stuffiness at the door.
